OPTOMETRIST — U.S. NAVY MEDICAL SERVICE CORPS | NATIONWIDE OPPORTUNITIES

U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine & Surgery (BUMED)
Locations Nationwide | Full-Time | Active Duty or Reserve

Whether tracking submarines on radar, conducting underwater ordnance disposal, or launching jets from an aircraft carrier, Sailors depend completely on their senses — and their vision must be as sharp as their mission. As a Navy Optometrist, you are responsible for maintaining the visual readiness of the fleet and the families behind it. Candidates from civilian backgrounds are encouraged to apply — no prior military experience is required.

This is a unique opportunity to practice the full scope of optometry in a mission-driven environment, including subspecialties rarely encountered in private practice — all without insurance approvals, billing cycles, or productivity quotas.

Position Highlights

  • Provide comprehensive primary eye care to active duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, their families, and retirees
  • Perform refractive services including refractive surgery co-management and prescription of spectacles and contact lenses
  • Diagnose and treat ocular pathology across a diverse patient population
  • Pursue subspecialty interests: low vision, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, specialty contact lenses, and more
  • Perform surgical co-management alongside ophthalmologists and a full multidisciplinary team
  • No insurance authorizations, billing, or RVU-based productivity pressure
  • Opportunities for leadership, teaching, and clinical research
  • Nationwide and global opportunities, aligned to current needs and your preferences
  • Key locations:
    NNMC Bethesda, MD
    NMRTC Portsmouth, VA
    Naval Medical Center
    San Diego, CA
    and more.

  • U.S. citizenship required; ages 21–41
  • Willing to serve a minimum of three years of active duty
  • Able to pass a full military medical examination and meet fitness standards
