As a Navy Optometrist, you are responsible for maintaining the visual readiness of the fleet and the families behind it. This is a unique opportunity to practice the full scope of optometry in a mission-driven environment, including subspecialties rarely encountered in private practice — all without insurance approvals, billing cycles, or productivity quotas.
Position Highlights
- Provide comprehensive primary eye care to active duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, their families, and retirees
- Perform refractive services including refractive surgery co-management and prescription of spectacles and contact lenses
- Diagnose and treat ocular pathology across a diverse patient population
- Pursue subspecialty interests: low vision, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, specialty contact lenses, and more

Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an AOA-accredited school
- Currently licensed and practicing in the U.S. (new graduates must obtain licensure within one year of beginning active duty)
- U.S. citizenship required; ages 21–41
- Willing to serve a minimum of three years of active duty
- Able to pass a full military medical examination and meet fitness standards
Preferred qualifications
- Residency training in ocular disease, low vision, or specialty contact lenses
- Fellowship or board certification (American Academy of Optometry — eligible for additional monthly certification pay)
- GPA of 3.0 or higher (undergraduate and optometry school)
- Broad therapeutic scope of practice licensure (state licensure in a state permitting full pharmaceutical prescribing)
Compensation & Benefits
- Active duty officer total compensation: $116,000–$179,000+, including base pay, BAH, and BAS (O-3 entry; increases with rank and years of service)
- Retention special pay: up to $15,000/yr for optometry officers remaining on active duty
- Sign-on bonus: up to $10,000 (Reserve track, immediate one-time payment)
- Specialty pay: up to $50,000/yr (Reserve option)
- Student loan repayment: up to $250,000 via HPLRP or Reserve loan repayment program
- HPSP scholarship (students): 100% tuition at any accredited OD school + $2,999/mo stipend (current 2025 rate) + books and required fees — optometry is explicitly HPSP-eligible through the Navy Medical Service Corps; 3-year service obligation
