Surgical Oncology Position Overview

Covenant HealthCare is seeking a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible General Surgical Oncologist to establish and lead a dedicated surgical oncology service line based at the Mackinaw Cancer Center in Saginaw, Michigan.

This opportunity offers a 100% focused surgical oncology scope with zero General Surgery call responsibilities. You will step into an expansive, underserved regional referral base supported by an integrated cancer care network, robust hospitalist and critical care teams, and dedicated surgical assists.

Opportunity Highlights & Practice Structure

  • Pure Oncology Focus: Focused exclusively on complex surgical oncology cases. No general surgery call or coverage required. Dedicated general surgery and specialty backup is provided in-house.
  • No Routine Breast or Colorectal Call: Dedicated breast and colorectal surgeons manage routine volumes, allowing the surgical oncologist to focus on complex, advanced cases.
  • Dedicated Clinic Setup: 3 dedicated exam rooms per provider at the Mackinaw Cancer Center, staffed with a dedicated RN and Medical Assistant (1:1 MA-to-provider ratio).
  • Surgical Facilities & Block Time: Guaranteed block OR time with access to 2 da Vinci robotic surgical platforms, advanced imaging (including on-site PET/CT), and a dedicated on-campus Ambulatory Surgery Center.
  • Dedicated OR Support: Experienced surgical assistant APP teams and dedicated scrub/circulating teams available for all major cases.
  • Collaborative Inpatient Support: Robust 24/7 employed Hospitalist and Inpatient Critical Care teams manage general medical admissions and primary hospital care.
  • Academic & Teaching Environment: Opportunity to work with and teach surgical residents and fellows rotating from Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine.

Clinical Scope & Breadth

  • GI Oncology: Gastric, esophageal, small bowel, and appendiceal malignancies.
  • Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB): Complex liver resections, pancreas (Whipple), and biliary tract procedures.
  • Peritoneal Surface Malignancies: Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC program development.
  • Melanoma & Soft Tissue: Advanced skin malignancies, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and sarcoma resections.
  • Endocrine Oncology: Complex thyroid resections, neck dissections, and adrenalectomies.
  • Diagnostic & Palliative: Advanced staging laparoscopies, lymph node evaluations, and palliative bypass/diversion procedures.

Comprehensive Support Network

  • Multidisciplinary Cancer Center: Weekly multidisciplinary tumor boards, dedicated cancer navigators, dietitians, social workers, and genetics counseling.
  • Medical & Radiation Oncology: Supported on campus by 5+ Medical Oncologists/Hematologists and 2 Radiation Oncologists utilizing dual linear accelerators and high-dose brachytherapy.
  • Specialty Support: Robust 24/7 coverage from Interventional Radiology (biopsies, drainages, port placements) and Advanced Interventional GI (EUS, ERCP, stenting).
  • Accreditations: Fully accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), NAPBC, NAPRC, and certified by the Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium (MOQC).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Guaranteed Base Salary: Negotiable and based on experience and MGMA data.
  • Productivity Incentives: $ per wRVU generated over the the benchmark threshold.
  • Starting Bonus: Starting around $25,000 (negotiable).

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Residency: Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency.
  • Fellowship: Completion of an SSO-approved / ACGME-accredited Complex  General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) fellowship.
  • Certification: Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology.
  • Licensure: Eligible for an unrestricted Michigan medical license and DEA registration.
  • Note: U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents; J-1 visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
