Wake Forest Baptist, an 885?bed tertiary care academic medical center, partners closely with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, creating a strong environment for education, innovation, and clinical research. The program is structured to manage the full spectrum of cardiovascular disease, from preventive and general cardiology to advanced interventions, heart failure, transplant, structural heart disease, and complex electrophysiology. This academic integration allows physicians to care for some of the most complex cardiac and vascular patients in the region while remaining engaged in teaching and scholarly activity. Programs include advanced heart failure and transplant, congenital heart disease, structural heart interventions, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and vascular and endovascular surgery.

Education and training are cornerstones of the program. The institution maintains long?standing, ACGME?accredited fellowship programs in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular and cardiothoracic surgery, and advanced practice provider cardiovascular fellowships.

The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine was created in 2025, The Department transitioned from Internal Medicine to reflect the continued growth, clinical volume, and academic mission of cardiovascular services across the enterprise. The Section currently supports 12 interventional cardiology physicians.

Position Overview

The Section Chief of Interventional Cardiology will provide strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the Interventional Cardiology Section, reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. The role is designed as 1.0 FTE, with an 80% clinical / 20% administrative effort. Up to 20% protected research effort may be added with appropriate funding support.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership for the development and growth of clinical and academic programs within Interventional Cardiology.

Establish and execute a long?term vision for the Section grounded in excellence across the core academic missions of patient care, education, and research, with a strong commitment to advancing health equity for the populations served.

Lead the development of a robust, enterprise?wide extramural research program aligned with Atrium Health’s institutional strengths and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Translational Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Science, while continuing to expand both industry?sponsored and investigator?initiated clinical trials.

Recruit, retain, and mentor exceptional clinical and research faculty and advanced practice providers, fostering professional growth, academic success, and career advancement among Section members.

Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with other Cardiovascular Medicine section chiefs, enterprise leaders, academic departments, and clinical service lines to advance shared clinical, educational, and research goals.

 

Clinical Responsibilities – Inpatient Services
10–13 weeks of inpatient service annually, including 8–10 weeks with weekend coverage.

Serving as overseeing attending for an APP?led inpatient team; responsibilities include morning rounds, care coordination, and consultative support.

Teaching Service: Oversight of resident teams

CVICU Service: Dedicated time with no other clinical effort responsibilities

Secondary sites: High Point Medical Center, Lexington Medical Center, Davie Medical Center, Wilkes Medical Center, Hugh Chatham Health, Alleghany, Greensboro

Clinical affiliations with external rural hospitals: Iredell Health, Catawba Valley Medical Center, VA

Cath Labs

5 cath labs at main campus, 3 at High Point and 1 at ASC in Greensboro

Clinical Focus

Full spectrum of interventional cardiology, and advanced structural heart procedures (TAVR, transcatheter mitral valve interventions, mechanical circulatory support including Impella, LAAO, and Watchman.

Typical Weekly Schedule

Two to three days per week in the cath lab performing procedures

One to two days per week in clinic

Outpatient Clinic
Opportunity to work closely with fellows in clinic.

Team?based care model using provider pods that include MDs and APPs; APPs manage the majority of return patient visits for physicians within the pod.

Robust clinical infrastructure, including Epic, Dragon dictation, and DAX ambient documentation tools.

Call & Weekend Coverage
Weekday STEMI call rotation on average, one every two weeks

Weekend STEMI call on average, one weekend per month
