Glaucoma Specialist (Assistant/Associate/Professor)

West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology are seeking a fellowship-trained Glaucoma Specialist for appointment at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level. This position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic academic department and practice at a state-of-the-art facility in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Position Highlights
- Provide comprehensive ophthalmology care with a focus on glaucoma
- Engage in teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows
- Participate in clinical, educational, and (as applicable) research initiatives
- Faculty appointment commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments
Academic Expectations
- Active involvement in medical education is required at all ranks
- Candidates at the Associate Professor or Professor level are expected to:
- Maintain a strong record of scholarly achievement
- Lead or contribute to an externally funded research program
- Demonstrate academic leadership and publication in high-impact journals
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent)
- Board certified or board eligible in Ophthalmology
- Eligible for West Virginia medical licensure
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Department Overview
The WVU Department of Ophthalmology includes 21 faculty members across 10 subspecialties: Comprehensive, Cornea, Glaucoma, Low Vision, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Oncology, Oculoplastics, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina, and Uveitis.
- Home to the only accredited ophthalmology residency and fellowship programs in West Virginia
- Residency program currently includes 10 residents, with planned expansion to 12
- Fellowship programs in Glaucoma, Retina, and Oculoplastics
Facilities & Clinical Volume
The WVU Eye Institute is a state-of-the-art facility featuring:
- 43 exam rooms and multiple procedure/testing suites
- Dedicated ophthalmic simulation lab
- On-site optical shop and minor surgery suite
- Basic science laboratories and wellness center
Annual volume:
- 40,000+ patient visits
- 2,200+ surgical procedures
Research & Innovation
- Home to the nationally recognized Vision Research Center
- Active collaboration across WVU and external institutions
- Current funding includes multiple NEI grants (R01 and R21)
- Ongoing clinical trials and global research initiatives, including glaucoma research in St. Lucia
