Chief Resident Recruitment for Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Programs

Location: Loyola MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, Illinois
Academic Year: 2027-2028

We are actively recruiting Chief Residents for the 2027-2028 academic year for Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital Internal Medicine and Transitional Year residency programs in Berwyn, Illinois. Each year, we select two Chief Residents to join our leadership team.

About Us:
Loyola MacNeal Hospital is a 374-bed facility with 3 residency programs: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Transitional Year. We are currently seeking 2 Chief Residents to enhance our Internal Medicine and Transitional Year programs, working closely with 42 Internal Medicine and 14 Transitional Year residents.

Position Overview:
The Chief Resident role is a one-year position that offers outstanding opportunities for recent residency graduates to further develop their teaching and leadership skills while also gaining clinical experience as an attending physician. Many of our former Chief Residents have moved onward to pursue careers in academic medicine, competitive fellowships, and hospital medicine. Chief Residents will engage in educational, administrative, and patient care responsibilities, including:

Teaching and Education:

  • Leading resident and medical student education through Chief-led conferences.
  • Presenting CME-accredited lectures to physicians.
  • Managing simulation workshops and high-fidelity simulations.

Leadership and Administration:

  • Representing the residency programs on key hospital and program committees.
  • Leading Quality Improvement Project(s) with residents.

Clinical Teaching and Supervision:

  • Supervising residents in continuity clinics and inpatient medicine attendings.

By the end of the academic year, Chief Residents develop a strong foundation in medical education, hospital leadership, and administrative skills, preparing them for diverse career paths in hospital medicine, academic medicine or private practice.

Application Criteria:

Ideal candidates should meet the following requirements:
1. Doctor of Medicine Degree (MD or DO).
2. Completion of an Internal Medicine Residency Training Program; Board Eligibility in Internal Medicine.
3. Strong interest in medical education, teaching, and curricular development.
4. Commitment to leadership and mentorship.
5. Ability to attend the APDIM or ACGME Chief Resident Conference in the spring prior to the start of the Chief resident year.
6. Valid US work authorization. If a work visa is required, only ECFMG-sponsored J1 visa holders are eligible to apply.

MacNeal Hospital is conveniently located in Berwyn, Illinois, just a 20-minute drive west of downtown Chicago.

This opportunity offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including:

  • Annual compensation of $102,749.
  • Reimbursement of the ABIM Board exam fee ($1,430 in 2026).

Founded in 1919, MacNeal Hospital is a 374-licensed-bed teaching hospital in Berwyn with advanced medical, surgical and psychiatric services and a 68-bed behavioral health program.
