New Free-Standing Emergency & Urgent Care | UNC Health | Opening 2027

UNC Health in partnership with the UNC SOM Department of Emergency Medicine is launching an innovative new care model through a partnership with Intuitive Health to bring freestanding facilities that combine emergency department and urgent care services under one roof to communities in Wake County, NC. The first location is planned for Wake County | North Raleigh with anticipated opening in May 2027.

This hybrid model allows patients to be evaluated by a board-certified emergency physician led team, ensuring they receive the appropriate level of care—whether urgent care or full emergency treatment—without the guesswork of choosing between the two.

These state-of-the-art facilities will feature on-site laboratory services, advanced imaging including CT and X-ray, and modern clinical spaces designed to deliver efficient, patient-centered emergency care while reducing unnecessary emergency department utilization.

UNC Health is seeking experienced, full-time Emergency Medicine physicians to join the inaugural clinical team to help launch this new model of care in Wake County.

Position Highlights

  • Provide emergency and urgent care evaluation within a hybrid ER/urgent care model
  • Care for patients across the full spectrum of acuity
  • Work in a newly built, modern facility with on-site imaging and laboratory services
  • Collaborate with UNC Health hospitals & specialty services for patient admissions, follow up, and consultations  
  • Participate in shaping workflows and culture for a brand-new clinical program
  • Full-time schedule with competitive shift structure
  • 120 hours per month
  • Opportunities to be involved in academics at UNC Medical Center
  • EMR: EPIC

Candidate Requirements

  • Board Certified / Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine work experience highly valued
  • Completion of ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency
  • Strong clinical decision-making and patient-centered communication skills
  • Interest in innovative models of immediate care delivery
