The VA Pacific Islands Health Care System in Honolulu, Hawaii, is seeking a skilled and patient-centered Diagnostic Radiologist. This is a 100% on-site position—no remote work is available. Diagnostic Radiologist Role Overview:

As an on-site Diagnostic Radiologist, you will provide comprehensive radiology services for our nation’s veterans. You will interpret a wide variety of imaging studies, support clinical teams with timely consults, and participate in multidisciplinary discussions to ensure superior patient care. In this fully in-person role, you’ll have daily collaboration with clinical colleagues and access to advanced imaging technology.

The diagnostic radiologist provides a spectrum of image interpretation, image-guided procedures and patient care services within the specialty of Diagnostic Radiology and may also possess additional subspecialty expertise. In addition to the clinical practice of general diagnostic radiology, other duties include contributions to quality assurance and performance improvement, oversight of technical quality, education of staff and trainees, committee assignments and other activities that support clinical operations and the mission, values and goals of the VA and the Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and report diagnostic imaging exams; correlate with clinical information.
  • Review and approve exam requests; prescribe and adjust protocols.
  • Oversee technical image quality and provide feedback to technologists.
  • Ensure proper medication administration, including contrast agents.
  • Promote infection control, radiation, and MRI safety practices.
  • Participate in quality assurance (peer review, protocol review, performance improvement).
  • Consult with clinical providers—exam selection, results, and patient management.
  • Communicate findings promptly and appropriately to support patient care.
  • Interact with patients for clinical history, consent, education, and documentation.
  • Collaborate to coordinate patient care and provide timely notification of significant results.
  • Engage in continuing education, literature review, and consult with colleagues to maintain optimal care.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
