Chair of Anesthesiology

Hennepin Healthcare System (Hennepin County Medical Center) is seeking an exceptional physician leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. This is an opportunity to lead a highly skilled, mission-driven department within one of the nation's premier academic safety-net health systems.

As Minnesota's largest safety-net hospital and a nationally recognized Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Hennepin Healthcare provides complex, high-acuity care to a diverse patient population. The Chair of Anesthesiology will play a key leadership role in shaping the future of perioperative services at Hennepin Healthcare System. Working in close partnership with surgical leaders, hospital administration, and multidisciplinary clinical teams, the Chair will advance quality and patient safety, improve access and operational performance, recruit and develop outstanding physicians and CRNAs, build and sustain an engaged, high-performing physician and CRNA team through mutual respect, and shared accountability, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

We are seeking a collaborative and visionary leader who is energized by solving complex problems, developing a high-performing team, and making a lasting impact on patient care, medical education, and the future of anesthesiology at Hennepin Healthcare System and Hennepin County Medical Center.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate Degree (MD, DO, or equivalent) is required
  • Current (or eligible for) license to practice Medicine in the State of Minnesota
  • Board certified in an ABMS recognized specialty
  • Minimum 5 years administrative leadership experience at the institution, department, or section level

  • Champion clinical excellence, patient safety, quality improvement, and exceptional patient care across all aspects of the department. 
  • Build strong partnerships across clinical, operational, and administrative teams while serving as a strategic physician leader who advances organizational priorities, operational performance, and medical staff engagement. 
  • Lead effectively through complexity and change with resilience, adaptability, transparency, sound judgment, emotional intelligence, intellectual humility, and the ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders. 
  • Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe, trauma-informed environment where diverse perspectives are valued, every team member has the opportunity to succeed, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are reflected in leadership decisions. 
  • Communicate openly and effectively by providing timely, constructive feedback and cultivating trust, mutual respect, and shared accountability. 
    Model and actively advance the mission, vision, and values of Hennepin Healthcare through daily leadership, decision-making, and interactions.
