FACILITY DETAILS: The Salisbury VA Health Care System is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to veterans across central and western North Carolina. Serving more than 90,000 Veterans, the health care system includes the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, along with community-based outpatient clinics in Charlotte and Kernersville. Designated as a Level 1A complexity facility by the Veterans Health Administration, Salisbury VA provides a comprehensive range of services, including primary and specialty care, mental health services, rehabilitation, extended care, and social support—all tailored to meet the unique needs of veterans. Position Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is impossible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA policy.
• Education: A Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine is required.
• Licensure: Candidates must possess a current, complete, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency: Completion of a residency program in an accredited core specialty.
• Board Certification: Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible in Ophthalmology.

• Preferred experience in treating medical retina conditions with anti-VEGF therapies, basic glaucoma, and cataracts.
• Work Schedule: 8:00-4:30pm
• Call Coverage: Per rotation 1 week every 5 weeks

The W.G. Hefner VAMC is a 484-bed medical center located in Salisbury, North Carolina. Inpatient services are provided for acute medicine, cardiology, surgery, psychiatry, physical rehabilitation, subacute and extended care, neuropsychiatry services, psychiatric intensive care, and geropsychiatry. Primary and specialized outpatient services are provided at the medical center and outpatient clinics. The medical center is affiliated with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with a focus on resident involvement in primary care, dermatology, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, and psychiatry. The Salisbury VAMC is recognized as one of the largest employers in Rowan County and enjoys the recognition and respect of the community through an active outreach program.

Federal Retirement Plan:

• VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
• How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
• Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
• The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
• For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
• In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
• Disability Retirement
• Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
