The Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center has an opening for an energetic, driven, and compassionate Cardiologist to serve the North Texas VA Healthcare System.

Facility Details: The Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas, is part of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System. It provides comprehensive health care services to Veterans, including primary care, specialty care, mental health, long-term care, and rehabilitation. Founded in 1885, the center is located on a historic campus and serves thousands of Veterans from northeastern Kansas and surrounding areas The Medical Center also serves Veterans from northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, including metropolitan Kansas City, rural areas, and tribal lands. Academically, the VA is affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine and other local nursing and pharmacy schools for training future health professionals.

  • Facilities and features: Inpatient and Outpatient Care: 91 beds for acute and long-term care, plus extensive outpatient services.
  • Historic Campus:Originally established in 1885 for Civil War Veterans, several campus structures are part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Position Details: A  cardiologist at the Leavenworth VA Medical Center is responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiac and cardiovascular diseases for Veterans. Key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Providing Direct Patient Care: Evaluating, diagnosing, and managing cardiac conditions in outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Performing and Interpreting Diagnostic Tests: Such as echocardiograms, stress tests, ECGs, and other cardiovascular procedures.
  • Collaborating with Multidisciplinary Teams: Working with primary care, surgery, pharmacy, nursing, and other specialists to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Educating Patients and Families: Explaining diagnoses, procedures, medications, and lifestyle modifications to improve heart health.
  • Consultation Services: Offering expertise to other medical providers regarding complex cardiac cases and management.
  • Participating in Quality Improvement: Engaging in clinical reviews, performance improvement initiatives, and ensuring adherence to VA policies and best practices.
  • Teaching and Training: Instructing residents, medical students, and staff as appropriate.

 

These responsibilities are carried out in accordance with VA regulations and the mission to provide high-quality care to Veterans. 

Tour of duty: Monday–Friday, 8:00am-4:30 pm. Some flexibilities will be discussed on a potential interview. No on-call.

Salary: $300,000-$400,000+recruitment incentive/Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
