The Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine seeks an accomplished and collaborative psychiatrist to serve as Section Chief and Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry Services at Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. This leadership position includes a faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a nationally recognized inpatient psychiatry program, overseeing clinical operations, quality initiatives, and faculty development across five inpatient psychiatric units comprising 118 beds. The Section Chief will work closely with departmental and hospital leadership to shape the future of inpatient psychiatric care while advancing Yale's missions of clinical excellence, education, and scholarship.

Position Highlights

As Section Chief, you will:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for inpatient psychiatric services.
  • Partner with nursing, social work, hospital administration, community organizations, and state agencies to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Lead physician recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional development initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of clinical excellence, innovation, quality improvement, and patient safety.
  • Support and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
  • Advance academic scholarship, educational programming, and research initiatives.
  • Collaborate across specialties to enhance integrated behavioral health services and care delivery.

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a visionary physician leader with a demonstrated record of clinical and administrative excellence.

Requirements:

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry
  • Completion of an accredited Psychiatry residency program
  • Eligible for Connecticut medical licensure

Preferred Experience:

  • Leadership experience within academic or hospital-based psychiatry
  • Oversight of acute inpatient psychiatric services and multidisciplinary teams
  • Faculty development, recruitment, and retention
  • Quality improvement, clinical operations, and strategic planning
  • Academic scholarship, education, and program development
