San Francisco Veterans Affairs (SFVA) current pool of Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) are University of California San Francisco (UCSF) General Surgery residents (or Stanford or Easy Bay General Surgery residents) who are in their research years. The resident work hour requirements have led to an additional need for PRP coverage at the SFVA, and a limited available pool of physicians who can provide this coverage. Under the new guidelines, residents will no longer be able to cover if PRP physicians are not available. In addition, under the new model, most of the call during the week will now be covered by PRP physicians, so hand-offs will be significantly increased unless we provide a more stable coverage plan.
