Chief, Pediatric Pain & Palliative Care

Job Summary:

Responsible for the direction and operation of the Pediatric Palliative Care section.  This includes educational responsibilities to the Medical Center, as well as outreach programs, and clinical and administrative responsibilities as described below.

A.  Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical support for inpatient Palliative Care consultation for infants, children and adolescents up to the 22nd birthday.
  • Offer telephone advice in response to physicians’ clinical questions.
  • Works with APN to deliver care to all patients referred for consultation.

B.  Administrative Duties:

  • Works cooperatively with the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in short and long range planning for the growth of the Pediatric Palliative Care Team.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Director and program leadership team in budget development and financial accountability for section.
  • Supervise the collection of data and reporting of said data as required by state and federal agencies and Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification in Advanced Palliative Care.
  • Recruit for other physician members of the Pediatric Palliative Care Section and other staff members as appropriate.
  • Attend Section Chief Meetings.
  • Attend other appropriate meetings needed for growth of Section.
  • In conjunction with Administrative Director and Operations Manager, participate in billing issues of practice, including evaluation of charges and revenue of practice, as well as monthly financial reports
  • Participates in quality improvement and quality assessment activities and creates and monitors quality practice parameters.
  • Serves as member of all appropriate HUMC medical/surgical committees relating to the Pediatric Palliative Care Section and other committees as designated by the Medical Board and the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics.
  • Interacting with and responding to patient survey and patient grievances regarding quality of care.
  • Interfacing and developing synergies with adult pain and palliative service.
  • Participate in/lead opportunities to obtain philanthropy for program and Children’s Hospital.

C.  Outreach Marketing:

  • Assist through personal one-on-one communication with the pediatric community.
  • Provide Grand Rounds at the other institutions.
  • Provide educational lectures to pediatricians in the area to promote HUMC name.
  • Work with general pediatricians to develop referral base in Section of Pediatric Pain Management.

D.  Educational Responsibilities:

  • Developmental and execution of the curriculum for didactics lectures for students and residents.
  • Present Pediatric Grand Rounds.
  • Train the other members of the Section.

E.  Research Responsibilities:

  • Develops clinical research programs in conjunction with the Children’s Hospital

BACKGROUD QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

M.D. Degree from a recognized medical school.

Board Certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics

Training or experience in the field of Pediatric Palliative care.

Current medical license in the State of New Jersey.

Ability to interface effectively with professional personnel.

Eligible for faculty appointment at the New Jersey Medical School.

Administrative experience in a clinical setting.
