JOB TITLE: Optometrist

 Position Summary:

The Kanakanak Hospital is owned and operated by the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation which is located in Dillingham, Alaska. Dillingham is home to about 2,347 residents and is also home to the largest state park in the country, the Wood-Tikchik State Park. The Kanakanak Hospital is located on a beautiful landscape that overlooks the Nushagak River that is full of salmon during the spawning months as well as freshwater Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char and Dolly Varden all year around. This facility is currently in need of an Optometrist to provide eye care for the persons utilizing Kanakanak Hospital or the village health clinics. To organize, supervise, and provide long range planning for the Corporation’s Optometry Clinic. To advise administration and Board on eye care questions and needs of the residents of Bristol Bay.

Qualification Requirements:

Must have degree from an accredited college of optometry and be licensed by the State of Alaska to practice optometry, including a diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical endorsement.

Experience:  Three years’ experience as optometrist required.  Contact lens training and work experience background.  Management skills.  Experience working with vendors to place orders, pricing, etc.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, coordinate, supervise, and implement the BBAHC eye care program. Responsible for personnel issues within the department, including hiring, performance evaluations, development and training.

  • Develop and administer eye care budget.

  • Provide orientation, technical guidance, clinical instruction and assistance on eye care matters to the village health aides.

  • Direct, administer and conduct on-site clinics in the villages associated with BBAHC.

  • Serve as member of the active medical staff.

  • Serve as chief advisor to corporation administration on eye care matters.

  • Function as primary consultant to the medical and corporate staff for ocular health questions and concerns.

Dillingham is home to about 2,347 residents that reside on the outskirts of the largest state park in the country, the Wood-Tikchik State Park. In Dillingham you enjoy some of the best sport fishing that Alaska has to offer. All five species of the Pacific salmon as well as freshwater rainbow trout, arctic char and Dolly Varden swim through the waters of Dillingham. Thanks to the fishing community in Dillingham it is the fastest growing community in its region. There are about 230 commercial fishing licenses it supports as well as four processing plants whose workers double the size of the city’s population in the summer months.

Some of the activities that occur in Dillingham are: Kayaking, canoeing, rafting, boating, fishing, hunting, and much more. The only way in and out of Dillingham is by plane.


Formed by Bristol Bay tribes in 1973 to provide health services to residents of Southwest Alaska, BBAHC now serves 34 villages and employs over 360 health care professionals.


Located in Dillingham, Kanakanak Hospital is a 16-bed facility providing 24-hour medical, pediatric and obstetrical care. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO). Offices for a number of BBAHC’s ancillary departments – Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Community Health Aide Program, Emergency Medical Services, WIC and the Infant Learning Program – adjoin the hospital. Also located on hospital grounds are Anamta (“Our Mother’s”) House, a pre-natal boarding home, and the Bristol Ay Counseling Center.
