Read on for details about the area and community:

This practice is located in Eureka, California, which is 5 hours north of San Francisco, minutes from Pacific Ocean beaches, and literally in the ancient and majestic giant redwood forests: temperate rainforests of ferns, lichens, rivers, streams, mountains, lakes, and lagoons and the tallest trees in the world.

The location excels in opportunities to

  • camp, hike or backpack trails through forests and along coastal beaches and prairies
  • stand up paddle the rivers, lakes, lagoons and bay
  • world-class fishing in both fresh and ocean waters
  • fabulous ocean point breaks for surfing; as well as sailing, kayaking, hunting
  • and so many other activities

National Geographic Traveler has selected Redwood National Park as one of the top 50 world destinations – one of only five U.S. places honored.

Backpacker magazine names the region as one of “The Best Cities to Raise an Outdoor Kid.”

And the World Wildlife Fund has named Humboldt County as part of one of the most diverse eco-regions left on the planet.

Nearby towns of Fortuna, Ferndale, Arcata, McKinleyville, and Trinidad each offer their own unique take on life in Humboldt.

Each no more than 20 minutes from Eureka and St. Joseph Hospital, these neighboring communities come together for incredible annual events:

  • Arcata Oyster Festival
  • Fish Festival in the coastal hamlet of Trinidad
  • the Fortuna Rodeo
  • the County Fair in Ferndale
  • the Jazz Festival in Eureka
  • And more!

Some events span across multiple towns and multiple days like the Annual Kinetic Sculpture Races and the cycling event The Tour of the Unknown Coast.

The Arcata Farmers’ Market in the square is a county wide attraction bringing residents and visitors to the cultural center of Humboldt to purchase amazing organic and local greens, meats, flowers, trees, plants and cooked foods—nearly always with live music and arts as well.

Whether is Arts Alive along historic Victorians in Old Town Eureka, the numerous local theater productions, softball tournaments, or our professional-amateur baseball team The Crabs in Arcata, Humboldt County is full of community, culture, fun and family.

The Area

Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, named our coastal redwood forests as the #1 destination in the US for 2018.

We are minutes from pristine Pacific Ocean beaches and surrounded by ancient redwoods that are the tallest trees in the world. In 2017, Eureka was awarded a California Cultural Site designation for its history and commitment to the arts and local culture. Humboldt has previously been recognized by Outdoor Magazine, National Geographic, Backpacker Magazine, USDA Most Scenic Rural County, and by Men’s Journal (as one of the top seven places to “buy land in paradise”).

Numerous area schools have received state and federal awards, and Humboldt State University—on 144 acres tucked into an old growth redwood grove with views of Humboldt Bay—has nearly 50 undergrad degrees, about a dozen graduate degrees, and one of the most impressive undergrad marine research departments in the country.

We are rural—about five hours drive north of San Francisco—but we have sophisticated cultural and social amenities, a thriving locavore tradition, and our local regional airport has daily direct flights to and from San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The Multi-Specialty Group

St. Joseph Health Medical Group is a foundation model multi-specialty group offering physician employed positions. We have over 100 providers in Humboldt County committed to providing compassionate, quality care for the entire family, through every stage of life.

The Hospitals

St. Joseph Hospital Eureka is a 138-bed full-service acute care facility that offers a broad range of services includ-ing cardiac surgery, a Level III Trauma and PCI (Chest Pain) Center, and many more services.

Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna is a 25 bed high functioning critical access hospital with a 24/7 ED, a hos-pitalist program, orthopedic and surgery center, primary care and a growing obstetrical service. The hospital itself is going through a major refurbishment with plans for a new ICU, expansion of the OR, and a brand new Acute Rehabilitation Unit addition slated for 2019.
