As an Orthopedic Surgeon and officer within the Army Medical Corps, you’ll have the opportunity to learn the most advanced procedures and techniques in practice today. Surgeons may even serve as faculty at one of our prestigious graduate medical education programs.

Duties Include:

  • Examine, diagnose and treat or prescribe course of treatment and surgery for patients with injuries or disorders with surgical conditions, and perform required surgery
  • Provide consultation and advice to the command and staff regarding surgical matters
  • Exercise command of medical units as provided by law and regulation
  • Perform special staff functions in health support for commanders at all levels
  • Conduct medical research on diseases of military importance, and conduct, supervise and participate graduate medical education and training of other medical personnel needed to sustain a robust and readily available medical system

Benefits include:

Active Duty (Full-Time)

  • Loan Repayment: Receive $120,000 in student loan repayment in $40,000 annual payments to qualifying federal student loans paid directly to the lending institution through the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (ADHPLRP).
  • Sign-on Bonus: $400,000 signing (accession) bonus plus $52,000 incentive pay annually (depending on specialty).
  • Location: Over 40 locations stateside and several more overseas, including Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, Germany, and Korea.
  • Time Off: 30 days paid vacation annually plus over 20 days for federal holidays and "Days of no Scheduled Activities."

Army Reserve (Part-Time - 38 days a year)

  • Loan Repayment: Receive $250,000 in student loan repayment in $40,000 annual payments to qualifying federal student loans paid directly to the lending institution through the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP).
  • Incentive Pay: $75,000 paid annually for 2, 3, or 4 years. Must have completed a residency program in your specialty. Incentive pay dependent on specialty.
  • Specialized Training Assistance: Monthly stipend while enrolled in an accredited residency program. Recipients must be a U.S. citizen and will serve in the Army Reserve after completing residency.
  • Insurance: Low cost comprehensive healthcare and dental plans for you and your family.
  • Travel opportunities, to include humanitarian missions.
  • Flexible retirement plan for 20 years of service.

Requirements Include:

  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree from an accredited U.S. school of medicine or osteopathy; foreign graduates may apply if they have a permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
  • U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence (Reserve only).
