The Research Development Scientist works within the Office of Research Development leading investigators to develop competitive scientific proposals that are attentive to sponsors’ needs and aligned with the Cleveland Clinic’s mission. This position will be responsible for mapping Cleveland Clinic’s research strengths to external funding opportunities, preparing complex grant proposals to federal and private foundation sponsors with a focus on Federal funding (NIH, NSF, DoD). Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Research Development, this individual will collaborate with the researchers across the Cleveland Clinic health system defining and implementing grant development strategies appropriate for each application. The Research Development Scientist will also be responsible for leading a research development program (Early career program, K program, multi-project program, as examples) which will be determined based on areas of strength and expertise.

Responsibilities:

Proposal Development

  • Identifying promising funding opportunities, gathering strategic intelligence on the funder’s needs and history, and helping build teams to address the need (primary Federal – NIH, DoD,  NSF).
  • Supporting single and multi-project grant opportunities including comprehensive editorial review as well as writing support for a variety of clinical disciplines.
  • Advising investigators on proposal content, format and organization; assist with updates across the application as the science and research aims
  • Providing critical review for relevance, significance, fit, potential pitfalls and alternative strategies.
  • Performing editing of all scientific content to ensure readability and completeness.
  • Writing ancillary proposal sections, such as drafting letters of support, facilities and resources data management plans, mentoring plans,
  • Ensuring visually pleasing proposal layout of text and graphics and work with investigators and ORD biomedical illustrators to develop compelling schemes and summary graphics.

Project Coordination

  • Facilitate meetings of interdisciplinary research teams, establish and maintain collaboration tools, providing technical
  • Communicate with funding institutions (Program Officers, Program Directors), as
  • Collaborate with PIs in developing project timelines and in the management of the proposal, ensuring quality submissions.
  • Work with leadership and investigators across fields to develop and facilitate grant opportunities that align with the strategic research goals across the Cleveland Clinic Health

Program Development

  •  Lead and facilitate a research development program (for example, early career program, K program, multi- project program, team science program); programmatic area will be defined in coordination with the Director and based on the interest and skill set of the Research Development
  • Facilitate program specific education and training sessions, as
  • Coordinate programmatic efforts across the Cleveland Clinic Health System including investigators in Nevada, Florida and the Ohio
  • Collaborate with research support serves across the Cleveland Clinic Health system (Faculty Development, OSRP, Diversity and Inclusion Office )
  • Perform other related duties to the work described herein and in line with the office’s

Required Qualifications:

  •  Track record of developing winning proposals to the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, National Institutes of
  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD, DrPH or equivalent); clinical science experience will be given priority.
  • Experience with NIH grant application procedures, formats, guidelines and
  • Demonstrated abilities in the conceptualization, organization and development of complex scientific projects in collaborative team
  • Superior analytical skills, written and verbal
  • Experience investigating and monitoring new grant funding opportunities as they are developed or announced by funding agencies, such as NIH, NSF, DoD
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with relevant computer/software system and applications, including MS Windows/Mac OS, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), web browser applications and e-mail
  • The ability to balance multiple priorities is required.
  • Experience in collaborative project management, independently setting and reaching goals and gathering and organizing
