This position may be based at either the Canandaigua or Bath main facilities. The incumbent will be required to travel routinely between the 3 main facilities of Canandaigua, Bath and Rochester with additional travel to rural CBOC's periodically.

The Deputy Chief of Staff position reports to the Chief of Staff. The position serves as Acting Chief of Staff in the absence of the Chief of Staff. The Deputy Chief of Staff will collaborate with the Chief of Staff to provide oversight and leadership to the clinical care lines and programs, including Community Care, as determined by the facility Medical Center Director and/or Chief of Staff. The Deputy Chief of Staff will also provide program oversight and coordination across care lines to successfully meet access measures per Mission Act guidelines/Community Care Program, quality of care SAIL metrics in all clinical service lines reporting to the COS, physician recruitment & retention and any other programs/ functions / priorities as determined by the facility Medical Center Director and/or of Staff. The Deputy COS will assist the COS in the operations of all service lines reporting to the COS. Will be expected to participate in direct patient care in their area of practice.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday - 8:00 am to 4:30 pm - Due to the nature of this leadership position, it is expected that working hours could be extended beyond the normal tour of duty

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

 The Canandaigua VA Medical Center, part of VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, 30 miles southeast of Rochester in Canandaigua, New York. The outpatient clinic offers primary care, specialty care, mental health care, a day treatment center, alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation, routine lab work, immunizations, and wellness and disease management programs.

The Canandaigua VA Medical Center and Rochester VA Outpatient Clinic serve patients from Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties. Both facilities maintain academic affiliations with Daeman College, Finger Lakes Community College, Keuka College, Nazareth College, New York Chiropractic, Roberts Wesleyan, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher, State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport and the University of Rochester.
