RESEARCH PROGRAM

The research program at the ICVAMC has been active for over 40 years and has consistently been one of the top ten VA facilities nationwide in terms of funding for biomedical research. In the past year support for basic research included $10.5 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs and $24 million from other agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. Presently there are 70 VA-funded projects and 251 active research protocols. Specialized areas of research expertise include the biology of inflammation, diabetic vascular disease, cancer, and immunology. The Iowa City VA Health Care System is the recipient of one five-year Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP)  and a Gulf War Special Initiative. In addition to a successful biomedical research program, the ICVAMC has developed an active Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) program and has active projects in Rehabilitation Research and Development (RR&D). HSR&D projects include a Center for Research Innovation and Implementation of Strategies in Practice (CRIISP) that focuses on development of best clinical practice models, and other grants that address areas such as the economic effects of guideline implementation, wound healing, and telemedicine.   RR&D projects are focused on glaucoma and other visual problems.   The research program has full accreditation by AAHRPP for its human research protection program and by AAALAC for its animal care and use programs.  In response to OEF/OIF, our investigators have developed new projects to understand better ways to manage patients with traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress disorder.   We continue to aggressively pursue new investigators and ensure relevance to the VA mission to maintain our success.

  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
