Seeking BC Pulmonary & Critical Care Physician for Excellent VA Chief & Staff Opportunity in Shreveport, LA

The Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (OBVAMC) is actively recruiting to fill Board Certified Chief & Staff Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine (BE considered) to participate in an inpatient and outpatient Pulmonary consultative services, bronchoscopy, other invasive procedure coverage and in teaching of students, residents and fellows rotating through the VA and supervising mid-level providers. A wide variety of patients including those with chronic obstructive lung disease, interstitial lung disease, asthma, sarcoidosis, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension and sleep disordered breathing are evaluated in the outpatient clinics. Provider will be responsible for care of seriously ill//life-threatening/serious medical conditions/health issue in the ICU. Provider will participate in electronic consultations (e-consult) to improve access to pulmonary care.  Will work collaboratively with other specialists as necessary in providing the best care to Veterans. The position provides an outstanding opportunity for individuals committed to an academic career in clinical care, teaching and research. Selected candidate will be considered for a faculty appointment within the Department of Medicine at the Louisiana State University Health and Science Center & be involved with education & teaching of medical students, residents & other providers. The Pulmonary Critical Care Section serves patients across the spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care for more than 45,000 veterans in an area to include in fifteen (15) Louisiana parishes, five (5) counties in Southern Arkansas and ten (10) counties in East Texas.

 

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, with on-call coverage (May be required to work evenings or weekends as a 24/7 Full-Time Physician).

  • Must be U.S. Citizen – Non-US Citizens may be considered
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Board Certification in PCCM preferred, but Board Eligibility may also be considered

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
