NORTH CAROLINA –Pediatric Faculty Position. The Pediatric Teaching Program at Cone Health, a community teaching hospital in Greensboro, NC, affiliated with the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, seeks an academic hospitalist/general pediatrician to join its expanding full-time faculty of 11 physicians. 

The role is that of clinician-educator to residents and students in three clinical venues: attending physician leading a team of pediatric and family medicine trainees on an 18-bed pediatric ward, attending for well term and late preterm babies in newborn nursery with over 6200 deliveries per year, and preceptor in the resident acute care clinic. Typically, there are a total of 16 shifts per month, which includes at-home call approximately 5 times a month. Other responsibilities include didactic teaching, mentoring, and quality improvement projects. There are no delivery responsibilities.

The teaching service interacts closely with pediatric Intensivists who cover a 4-bed PICU, pediatric emergency physicians, in-house neonatologists who staff a 45-bed NICU in a newly opened state-of-the-art Women’s and Children’s Hospital, pediatric subspecialists, and an ambulatory clinic that serves as the home site for the UNC Pediatric Primary Care Residency. Both the inpatient ward and newborn nursery are supported by nurse practitioners.

The ideal candidate will be BC/BE in Pediatrics or Med/Peds, possess outstanding clinical skills and teaching expertise. Board certification in pediatric hospital medicine is not required. The FTE is flexible to meet the needs of the program and applicant.  Applicants are eligible for a faculty appointment at the UNC School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at the assistant or associate professor level. There are opportunities for clinical, QI, and administrative leadership roles.

Facility Description

As Cone Health’s flagship, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is a Level 2 trauma center and is a 628-bed teaching hospital and referral center. It is the largest and most comprehensive medical center within our 5-county region, with a close affiliation with the UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), renovated in March 2016, is a 4-bed unit that can be flexed to 6 beds. the PICU serves the critical care needs of medical, surgical, and trauma pediatric patients.

Cone Health offers a Level III 36-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at the Women’s Hospital. Additionally, the Women's and Children's Center programs and services include:

  • 6000 deliveries performed each year
  • High-risk obstetrical program
  • Maternal and infant specialists
  • Breastfeeding consultants for inpatient and outpatient consultation

Pediatric subspecialties include asthma/allergy, genetics, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric psychology and pediatric surgery. 

In addition, Cone Health as a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, is also part of the federally funded public service student loan forgiveness program. Working in the nonprofit sector offers a unique benefit to federal student loan borrowers. Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, student loan borrowers who work full time at certain nonprofits may be eligible to get the remainder of their loans erased.

It offers 5 colleges/universities, an annual 5-week classical music festival (The Eastern Music Festival), Greensboro Symphony, and hosts many nationally acclaimed sporting and entertainment events. There are excellent schools and a wide variety of first-class restaurants. Greensboro is about 2 hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains and close to 4 hours from the ocean.
