Job description

Major duties include, but may not be limited to:

  • Assists with managing Behavioral Health Services at the Wilmington VA and the five associated Community outpatient clinics. Services include general outpatient mental health clinic services as well as evidence-based treatment for Post Traumatic Disorder, Military Sexual Trauma and Substance Use Disorders.
  • Supervises BHS staff, including psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, peer specialists, and nurses to ensure program quality. Works in close collaboration with the fellow clinical leaders of Psychiatry, Social Work, and Nursing to ensure each staff member is meeting all requirements for clinical competency.
  • Supervision of psychology interns and practicum students
  • Manages operation of key clinical programs to include full responsibility for the day-to-day activities of the Wilmington VAMC and associated Community-Based Outpatient

Clinic BHS programs and is instrumental in enhancing services.

  • Provides oversight for various BHS programs.
  • Employs strategic planning to ensure the provision of high quality services to meet the needs of the Veterans being served and planning, and developing and implementing short- and long-term goals and objectives consistent with the program's strategic plan.
  • Monitors administrative and programmatic resources and deploys those resources in support of the program needs.
  • Provides a full range of psychological assessment and treatment services of psychological disorders for a wide range of patients.
  • Provides education to patients, family members, and significant others about psychological disorders and treatments.
  • Develops, implements, and documents the psychotherapeutic treatment plan, including assessments, for an assigned caseload of patients.
  • Executes ongoing program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the Psychology and BHS services.
  • Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
