Position Description and Responsibilities

Chief of Cardiology

Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC), Miami Beach, FL Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine is seeking a Division Chief of Cardiology to oversee the growth of the division’s established programs and the expansion and management of the Cardiology Division at MSMC and all affiliated sites.

The next Chief of Cardiology will have experience in growing and expanding high quality clinical programs through strategic recruitment and cultivating strong relationships with referring providers.  In addition, the next Chief will have strong leadership skills collaborating with administrative leadership to promote the efficient delivery of high quality care.  The next Chief will also have a clinical presence providing care alongside their division members. 

The incoming leader will also serve as Chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, FL and, as such, should have academic accomplishments consistent with a rank of Associate Professor or Professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.  The Chief will play a key role in the advancement of the research and education missions of Mount Sinai Medical Center. This individual will be the focal point to advance academic goals by working closely with leadership of the Division of Cardiology at Columbia University in NY given the organizational partnership between the programs. 

Department of Medicine – Columbia University Division of Cardiology

The Department of Medicine is the largest Department at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The Department includes 15 divisions committed to compassionate clinical care, educational excellence, and innovative research. This includes robust residency and fellowship programs including internal medicine, cardiology, interventional cardiology, infectious diseases, and pulmonary/critical care. 

The Division of Cardiology provides leading-edge cardiology care, combining the most advanced subspecialty expertise with cutting-edge technology with an emphasis on access, quality, and equity. The Division of Cardiology offers state-of-the-art services by nationally known physicians with the highest levels of training and the most regional experience. The division currently has 25 faculty physicians and 5 advanced practice providers who provide cardiac services at Mount Sinai Medical Center and many of our physician practices across Miami-Dade and Monroe County.  They provide services to over 37,000 outpatient visits annually.

The Division has undergone rapid growth in the last few years, and strategic recruitment of cardiology faculty is a critical part of the position.

The Division of Cardiology offers specialty care in 1) clinical cardiology, 2) cardiac electrophysiology 3) interventional and structural heart 4) echocardiography, 5) nuclear cardiology, 6) cardiac critical care, and 7) clinical trials.  Strong interest exists to develop a robust advanced heart failure program. 

In 2023, Mount Sinai performed over 3200 diagnostic catheter procedures, 1200 percutaneous coronary interventional procedures, 139 TAVRs, 28 mitral clips, 386 ablations, and 486 device placements.  Mount Sinai is the busiest clinical catherization labs in South Florida. 

There is close collaboration between the Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, which offers extensive care of patients with cardiac disease including open and minimally invasive bypass and valve surgery as well as open and endovascular treatment of aortic pathologies. In addition, the cardiac surgery program provides support for ECMO. There is also a partnership among cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, and genetic specialists as part of a rapidly expanding Aortic Center. A total of 5 surgeons practice at Mount Sinai including 3 cardiac focused surgeons and 2 predominantly thoracic surgeons. 

The Division has originated large NIH funded clinical trials on topics from pacemaker mode selection, to coronary disease, to toxic metal chelation since 1995.  Additional sources of funding include State, industry and foundation grants.  The Division has a strong presence at national meetings presenting original research. The Chief will be encouraged and supported in expanding on this tradition. 

As an academic center, the faculty members also originate and participate in research in cardiovascular diseases to explore more effective treatments and allow patients access to national clinical trials. The Hospital encourages candidates with the demonstrated ability to originate sponsored research through NIH, Foundations, industry, or other sources.  The Division also offers fellowship training in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, and the Chief will participate in teaching and evaluation and recruitment of trainees.

As a visible representative of Mount Sinai, the Chief will be expected to participate in Public Relations activities, including media, community appearances, and other activities.

An important volume of patients come to Mount Sinai from external referring physicians.  The Chief will be an important part of maintaining and expanding these external relations.

The Chief reports to the Hospital CEO.

 

Qualifications

  • Must possess an MD degree or equivalent
  • Florida Medical License required
  • Eligible for Faculty Appointment at Columbia University
  • Board Certified in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, or other cardiology sub-specialty
  • Post-offer Drug Screen and Health Assessment required
