Two Clinical Child/Pediatric Psychologists for Medical/Psychiatric Partial Hospitalization Program

Children’s Mercy Kansas City is launching a partial hospitalization program to serve youth with medical/psychiatric complexity and youth who present with developmental differences and severe behavior.  The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health is recruiting a psychologist with broad training in clinical child/pediatric psychology to assist in the development and staffing of this interdisciplinary program.  PHP professionals will include psychiatrists, BCBAs, pediatricians, licensed clinical social workers, nurses, dieticians, child life specialists, and teachers, as well as support staff, including a care coordinator/discharge planner.  Approximately 12 beds will be allocated for older children and teens with medical and psychiatric complexity, 6 beds for young children who require either med/psych or behavior services, and 6 beds for youth with severe behavior.

Training and/or experience with youth who have chronic illness with complicated adjustment/nonadherence, depression, anxiety, functional neurological disorders, disordered eating (e.g., ARFID), disordered behavior, and other psychiatric conditions is preferred.  Experience with evidence-based interventions and family-based intervention is preferred.  It is not expected that any one clinician will have experience in all these areas; rather, we are building a program that includes clinical psychologists, doctoral and master’s level BCBAs, and licensed clinical social workers who will complement one another’s areas of expertise in diagnosis and treatment.  The clinical psychology roles will include individual and family intervention, psychological assessment, oversight and support of the milieu to promote trauma-informed, patient-centered care, and, based on experience/interest, group therapy.  We are recruiting faculty at all levels of experience and opportunities exist for program development and leadership.  In addition to the PHP, Children’s Mercy is developing an integrated inpatient unit that will provide services for the patients named above, but who require inpatient care.  Opportunities will exist to participate in the development of both programs.

The positions will include teaching and supervising in the hospital’s pediatric medical and psychology training programs, including our APA-accredited psychology internship, and include protected academic time for service, research, and other scholarly activities.  Faculty mentoring is available for those interested in clinical scholarship (e.g., program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives).  This position carries an academic appointment at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, with rank commensurate to qualifications and experience.

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in clinical psychology, pediatric psychology, or clinical child psychology
  • Completed an internship at an APA-accredited internship program with a focus on child psychology
  • Relevant experience
  • Eligibility for licensure in Missouri and Kansas

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health at Children’s Mercy is growing and expanding programs as part of the institution’s Mental and Behavioral Health Strategic Plan.  We offer a dynamic and collegial work environment that includes 52 psychologists, 9 developmental pediatricians, 7 child and adolescent psychiatrists, master’s and doctoral level board certified behavior analysts, and other allied health professionals who work together to provide outstanding mental and behavioral health care to youth in our region and beyond.  This position includes a competitive salary and benefits package.  Candidates at all levels of experience will be considered.
