Fellowship Details:

Gillette Children's is seeking a BC/BE Orthopedic physician for a 6-month neuromuscular subspecialty fellowship, anticipated to start August 2024. The goal of this 6-month neuromuscular subspecialty fellowship training program is to provide fellowship-trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeons with advanced subspecialty training area of neuromuscular orthopaedic care.

This fellowship, while surgical in nature, has a strong clinical component. The fellow will participate in clinic with staff physician, with exposure to both pediatric and adult patients with neuromuscular disorders. The fellow will also participate in in multi-disciplinary clinics, including spasticity evaluation clinic, spina bifida, early motor delay, neuromuscular upper extremity, and muscular dystrophy clinics. They will have the opportunity to work with the Gillette physiatrist physicians in Botox and Phenol injections, and upon interest, observe the neurosurgery team in performing selective dorsal rhizotomies and baclofen pump implantations.

  • The teaching will take place through a variety of methods including:
    • one-on-one teaching with the faculty physicians in the outpatient clinic, inpatient unit, and in the operating room
    • Didactic teaching in morning conferences
    • Dedicated time in the fellow’s schedule for scholarly activity including self-directed learning and research
    • Formal gait analysis interpretation certification with gait lab physicians, physical therapists, and engineers.

The fellow will work alongside orthopaedic surgery residents in a collaborative and supportive manner to ensure a mutually beneficial experience for all parties involved in education. Hopefully, the fellow can assume a teaching role in some situations in the outpatient clinic and in the operating room to augment the resident learning experience and the fellow teaching experience.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Prior to appointment in the program, fellow should have successfully completed an ACGME accredited (or equivalent) residency in orthopaedic surgery and a POSNA or ACGME accredited fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery.
  • Fellow must be eligible for/obtain a physician/surgeon Minnesota Medical License

Pay & Benefits Information:

Benefits will be provided by Gillette Children’s Hospital. Compensation will be at the level of a PGY-6 trainee in the state of Minnesota for the 6-month tenure.
