Investigator for Critical Care - University of Kansas Health System

The University of Kansas Health Care System, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, is recruiting two Critical Care faculty positions at its main campus in Kansas City, Kansas. The University of Kansas Hospital is expanding critical care services to cover a bone marrow transplant ICU in addition to core Medical ICUs. The Division currently includes 40 faculty from diverse backgrounds with expertise in basic, clinical and translational research and is ranked #42 by the U.S. News and World Report. 

The group is seeking applicants with an interest in Primary Investigator for Critical Care research therapies, quality improvement, or education. Current funding or concrete pathway for research funding expected. Applicants may be at the Assistant, Associate or full Professor level.

Position Overview:

Tenure track appointments are full-time with an initial probationary period of seven years. Criteria for promotion includes significant achievements in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The award of tenure is based on potential for sustained contributions, performing beyond expected duties, and demonstrating leadership and innovation in activities that enhance the reputation of the University. 

The Clinical Scholar Track is for full-time faculty members who are heavily involved in clinical service, education, and related scholarship. This track has two career paths: Clinician-Educator concentrating on teaching and Clinician-Investigator for concentrating on research/scholarship. Significant contributions in professional and academic service are required for both paths.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Board Certified or eligible in Critical Care Medicine.
  • Work Experience: Variable. Fellowship experience through established Critical Care clinician and investigator.
  • Skills: Investigator initiated Critical Care research.
  • Must be eligible for Kansas medical licensure.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Education: Board Certified in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care medicine.
  • Work Experience: Established Critical Care Investigator and clinician.
  • Skills: Preferred Specific Skills

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Primary Investigator for Critical Care research for therapies, quality improvement, or education. Current funding or concrete pathway for research funding expected.
  • Provide clinical Critical Care services in multiple academic center intensive care units.
  • Participate in the education of fellows, residents, students, and health system employees.
  • Diagnose, manage, and deliver care to critically ill patients in one of 5 Medical ICU teams, inclusive of bone marrow and solid organ transplants
  • Lead ICU teams comprised of trainees, advanced practice providers (Critical Care certified), nurses and specialists to oversee care for critically ill patients
  • Closed ICU model
  • Develop and conduct research and clinical trials in the field of critical care medicine
    • Access to research coordinators and basic science laboratories to support critical care research
    • Access to clinical trials units, medical informatics and biostatistical support for critical care research
