Excellent Hospitalist Opportunity in Beckley, West Virginia

The VA  Medical Center (VAMC), located in Beckley, WV, is an 18-bed general medical and surgical facility with a 50-bed Community Living Center (CLC).  We are looking to add a BE/BC Hospitalist to our highly qualified care team, who is a highly motivated and shares our commitment to providing excellent care to our US veterans.

The Beckley,  VA Medical Center  is small enough to connect with the patients but big enough to still have some of the newest equipment available.  We foster excellence  through  mentorship, leadership, and educational programs, giving you the tools, you need to serve our Veterans the best.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Full-time, 12 hrs.shift; 7AM to 7pm and 7PM to 7AM, including weekends and holidays;  minimum night requirement every 4th tour
  • No Call
  • Flexible work schedule
  • 13  med/surg  beds and  5 ICU  beds
  • 24/7 tele-critical care support
  • Average daily patient census – 6 to 8 patients per day
  • Academic training  of medical students, medical residents, EN residents, NP students and fellows
  • Responsible for inpatient care and follow-up for patients admitted to the Medical Center.
  • Responsible for medical consultation to inpatients admitted to other services.
  • Perform administrative and committee work related to improving patient care and clinical outcomes as assigned.
  • Ensures appropriate care, promotion of Health, education and counseling of family members and control of risk factors.
  • Provide medical evaluation and direct the overall management of acutely ill, hospitalized patients.

Beckley VAMC is a 30-bed general medical and surgical care facility with a 50-bed community living center. The medical center is a Joint Commission accredited, rural access facility.  The community living center offers skilled nursing care, post-acute rehabilitation and restorative care, palliative care, and respite care for eligible Veterans.   The medical center also operates a home based primary care program.

The Greenbrier County VA Clinic opened at a temporary location, 3584 Davic Stuart Road, Lewisburg, WV, on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. 

The Princeton VA Clinic opened on June 8, 2015.  The clinic is located at 1511 North Walker Street, Princeton, WV. 

Vet Centers Beckley VAMC supports two Veterans Outreach Centers -- one located in Beckley, and the other in Princeton, West Virginia.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
