Transplant Nephrologist - UVA School of Medicine - Faculty

Position Overview:


The Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a full-time board-certified or board-eligible Transplant Nephrologist to join our renal team in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is an open rank, tenure-ineligible position.  Rank and salary will be dependent upon qualifications.  The successful candidate should possess outstanding clinical, technical, and interpersonal skills, and training from top-rated institution. 

The transplant nephologist candidate will provide direct patient care and lead multi-disciplinary teams in the in-patient and out-patient setting to manage recipient of kidney and pancreas transplant, conduct pretransplant evaluation, perform living donor candidate evaluation, and determine suitability of organs from medically complex deceased donor.  The candidate will participate in clinical and operational meeting such as selection committee, candidate review board, HLA review, post-transplant review, and living donor meeting.  It is expected that the candidate will actively engage in quality improvement project and clinical problem-based taskforces, including serving as lead transplant nephrologist on certain projects.  Participation in teaching programs for transplant nephrology and surgery fellows, general nephrology fellows, medical house staff, medical students and transplant advanced practice providers and coordinator is required. Research experience is preferable but not mandatory.

The UVA kidney-pancreas transplant program is a large volume transplant center with sustained growth over the last 5 years. In 2023, UVA performed 203 adult kidney and/or pancreas transplants and with excellent patient and graft survival.  We strive to create a collaborating working environment which fosters professional growth and provide the platform for the faculty to become leaders in the field of transplantation. The faculty is encouraged to critically appraise the current established practices in transplantation, explore new therapeutic and diagnostic paradigms, and embrace emerging technologies to increase access to transplantation and promote longevity of patient and allografts.    

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct 5½-day clinics per week, focusing on both pre- and post-transplant patient care.
  • Participate in listing and Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings.
  • Manage inpatient services as required, with no outpatient clinic duties during inpatient rotations.
  • Collaborate in a growing transplant program performing 250-300 kidney and pancreas transplants annually.
  • Engage in teaching opportunities within Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Graduate Medical Education (GME).
  • Provide mentorship and contribute to the academic growth within a large fellowship program.

Schedule:

  • Flexible schedule available, though the role includes a full-time commitment.
  • Call duties include 9-10 weeks per year.

Hospital Coverage:

  • UVA Main Hospital.

Clinical Environment:

  • Average of 8-10 post-transplant patients per session, 4-6 pre-transplant patients per session.
  • Access to comprehensive onsite equipment and ancillary services, including clinic echocardiography, a dedicated inpatient unit with IMU, a dedicated infusion center, and onsite dialysis and apheresis.
