This is a rare opportunity to help guide a nationally recognized, academically affiliated medical center serving 135,000+ Veterans across 38 Texas counties and 2 counties in southern Oklahoma, spanning 13 sites of care throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth region.

Position: Deputy Chief of Staff (Physician – Full Time)

  • Location: Dallas VA Medical Center
  • Salary Range: $250,000 – $375,000
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
    (Occasional evenings/weekends as needed)

What You Will Lead

As Deputy Chief of Staff, you will serve as a key executive supporting the full scope of VANTHCS operations, including:

Core Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Chief of Staff to lead strategic planning, execution, oversight, and performance improvement across this complex healthcare enterprise.
  • Provide direct executive oversight for clinical services, research programs, and academic affiliations.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, Veteran-centered care across all VANTHCS facilities.
  • Guide innovation and systems redesign initiatives to support continuous improvement.
  • Serve as acting Chief of Staff in their absence.
  • Collaborate with an outstanding, diverse house staff and faculty in one of VA’s premier academic settings.
  • Support the evolution of a dynamic, innovative VA healthcare system with a strong national footprint.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is a progressive health care provider in the heart of Texas. Poised as VA's second largest health care system, we serve over 113,000 Veterans and deliver 1.4 million outpatient episodes of care each year to Veterans in 38 Texas counties and two counties in southern Oklahoma. We have 4,700 employees and 1,700 community volunteers who are driven by the passion to serve at Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic, Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic, Polk Street VA Annex Clinic and five community based outpatient clinics.

In 2009, a Fisher House was established on the Dallas campus to provide no-cost temporary lodging in a home-like setting for families of Veterans or active duty military personnel undergoing treatment at the facility.

Recognizing the importance of educating tomorrow's clinicians, we have an important teaching mission that provides education and experience to 1,875 residents, students and trainees. As a major research center, VANTHCS has more than 90 principal investigators and 400 research staff who work daily to create advances in our understanding and treatments of diseases and disabilities that affect Veterans and the general population Remarkable gains in clinical performance, access to care, stakeholder relationships, efficiency and quality are evident here.
