Chief-Emergency Medicine

The Robert J Dole VA Medical Center (VAMC) is seeking a full-time physician to serve as Emergency Medicine Service Chief. The Chief has the responsibility for the successful planning, directing and coordination of medical services provided in the Emergency Department of the RJ Dole VAMC and is accountable and responsible to the Chief of Staff.

The duties and responsibilities of the Emergency Care Service Chief include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • This position is primarily clinical in nature, and may work work up to 75% clinical depending on staffing needs of the department.
  • The Chief of the Emergency Department will recruit, retain and maintain well qualified Emergency Department, Employee Health, Midlevel providers and Occupational Health physicians.
  • Schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage, and serving as Emergency Department, Employee Health and Occupational Health liaison with hospital administration and medical staff.
  • Will have primary responsibility for the Emergency Department, Employee Health, and Occupational Health mid-level providers.
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills and a high degree of personal and professional skills, interpersonal relations, critical thinking, and problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Will provide primary managerial and supervisory direction of the Emergency Department, Employee Health, and Occupational Health.
  • Will provide strategic management of the service, including personnel management and requests for additional resources and lead in developing the annual strategic plan for the Emergency Department, Employee Health, and Occupational Health.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Friday, may vary subject to overall ED staffing

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center & Regional Office Center is a primary and secondary care facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, secondary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, visual impairment, spinal cord dysfunction, prosthetic laboratory and extended care services. The medical center serves veterans living in 59 counties of the state.

Several universities are in Wichita, the largest being Wichita State University with an enrollment of 15,000 students. McConnell Air Force Base is nearby.In July 2006, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Wichita 9th on its list of the 10 best U.S. big cities in which to live. In 2008, MSN Real Estate ranked Wichita 1st on its list of most affordable cities. Wichita has won the national distinction of All American City not once...but four times!
