Job Description

Join our Team at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco, CA as a Psychologist (Neuropsychologist)!

The incumbent will be ABPP-CN board-certified or board-eligible, with specialized training and expertise in clinical neuropsychological and psychological evaluation, consultation, and intervention procedures appropriate for an adult clinical practice. The incumbent will have experience providing these services working with adults of diverse backgrounds with known or suspected neuropsychological deficits, including those related to AD, PD, and other neurodegenerative conditions, TBI, epilepsy, FND/FCD, neurodevelopmental conditions (LD, ADHD), a range of medical and mental health disorders, including persons with multiple comorbid presenting conditions.

As a consulting clinical neuropsychologist primarily serving ambulatory care programs at a major medical center, with occasional inpatient work the neuropsychologist provides a full range of neuropsychological diagnostic and consultation services, including neuropsychological/psychological evaluation and consultation, patient/family education, with potential for involvement in brief cognitive rehabilitation, and/or other interventions. The incumbent consults with medical center staff in Neurology, Mental Health, and Medicine clinics, and may be asked to participate in multidisciplinary teams, including the Memory Clinic, the Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, the Rehabilitation Medicine TBI clinic, the Clinical Center (PADRECC) DBS surgery care-conference team, and the Epilepsy Center of Excellence, and others. The neuropsychologist offers assessment and consultation services to characterize the pattern of neuropsychological functioning, establish baseline, and/or monitor for change, and interprets findings in a manner that serves to guide care and treatment planning and other clinical decisions, sensitive to a range of individual factors. The incumbent actively participates in program development, assists Program Manager in implementation of the program, and is involved in ongoing program evaluation.

As a clinical educator also involved in training residents in the APA-accredited Clinical Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Residency and Neuropsychology-track interns in our APA-accredited predoctoral internship program, the incumbent collaborates with other program faculty and assists the Training Director in ongoing implementation and program development. The incumbent serves on the Neuropsychology Residency and Psychology Training Committees and is active in recruitment and selection of trainees. The incumbent provides specialized didactics, skills training, and supervision aimed at preparing residents for independent practice and ABPP-CN board certification. The incumbent completes regularly scheduled formal evaluations of the residents and assists with reporting to the APA CoA and other responsibilities associated with management of the program. The incumbent also provides didactics and other training and clinical supervision to predoctoral practicum students rotating in Neuropsychology Section. Where applicable, the incumbent also offers limited case-based instruction to medical students, residents, house staff, interdisciplinary team and other professionals within and outside of medical center.

The incumbent actively participates in program development and/or program evaluation and may be involved in research and/or other scholarly activities related to advancing the science and practice of neuropsychology.

The incumbent assists with administrative activities associated with the operation of a clinical neuropsychology consultation program, and completes other tasks delegated by the Neuropsychology Program Manager and the Training Director for the Clinical Neuropsychology Residency.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
