Job Description

Join our Team at the Department of Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Livermore, CA as a Physician – Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation!

The PM&R Staff Physician is responsible for clinical oversight and delivery of medical and rehabilitative care in the outpatient clinic or inpatient Polytrauma related programs, including the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC)/Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (CRC) and the Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program (PTRP) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care facility.

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides medical/rehabilitation care to veterans and active-duty personnel through clinical evaluation and treatment within the inpatient Polytrauma programs.
  • Provides medical care and rehabilitation team coordination to veterans and active-duty personnel within the Polytrauma System of Care. Primary responsibility will be to the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center, Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (PRC/CRC), and Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program (PTRP) with outpatient PM&R clinic coverage as needed.
  • Ensures clinical appropriateness of the treatment plans of patients served, including timely and appropriate transition to other levels of care, notation of contraindications and precautions of care.
  • Supervises and educates/trains PM&R residents in clinical activities relevant to PM&R and Polytrauma.
  • Conducts daily rounds with the PM&R residents, nursing, and other members of the interdisciplinary team and communicates/interacts daily with the team as indicated.
  • Collaborates with other services to ensure appropriate and timely consultation and coordination of care.
  • Assists in the identification of training and educational needs for the PSC and provides education and training for all members of the clinical staff as needed.
  • Assists in processing referrals of patients into the inpatient Polytrauma programs within 48 hours of receipt.
  • Participates in telehealth between PRC/CRC/PTRP and the appropriate military treatment facilities (MTF) or other referral sources as needed.
  • Facilitates the provision of 24/7 rehabilitation physician coverage in the PSC.
  • Ensures the ongoing provision of care that complies with the "Organization Code of Ethics" for the VA (HCSM 00-04-19)
  • Participates in performance improvement activities of PM&R, WBRC and PSC/PNS, including T JC and GARF recertification.
  • Demonstrates the incorporation of necessary knowledge and skills into the assessment, treatment, evaluation, and continuation of care provided to the following age groups that reflects the physical, psychological, social, cognitive, pharmacological, and nutritional needs and characteristics of each age group, as based on sound growth and developmental principles and using established criteria: Young Adult, Middle Years Adult, and Older Adult.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
