Core Clinical Expertise

  • Diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes
  • Management of essential tremor, dystonia, chorea, ataxia, and myoclonus
  • Advanced treatment of Huntington’s disease
  • Evaluation and treatment of drug-induced movement disorders
  • Complex medication management for advanced Parkinson’s disease

Procedural / Interventional Skills

Movement disorder specialists are often attracted to positions where they can perform or co-manage advanced therapies:

  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programming
  • Participation in DBS patient selection and surgical planning
  • Botulinum toxin injections for dystonia, spasticity, tremor, and blepharospasm
  • Duopa (carbidopa/levodopa intestinal gel) pump management
  • Selection of patients for MRI guided Focused ultrasound treatment for tremor
  • Apomorphine and foslevodopa pump therapy initiation and management

Multidisciplinary Care Interests

Many movement specialists prefer working in team-based programs:

  • Collaboration with neurosurgeons performing DBS
  • Integrated clinics with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy
  • Cognitive and psychiatric care collaboration
