Psychiatry Opportunity-Memphis VA-Millington CBOC

The Millington Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) has an opening for a psychiatrist that offers a dual academic appointment with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The CBOC is a part of the Department of Veterans Affairs and falls under the Memphis VA Medical Center. It’s one of the largest of twelve community-based clinics within the Memphis VA clinical network.

The Memphis VA is a 1a complexity tertiary care VA healthcare system located in one of the fastest growing Veteran population regions in the United States. The main campus provides comprehensive care to almost 69,000 Veterans in a 52-county area of Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and Northeast Arkansas. It includes 236 inpatient beds with a 26-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in vast areas of medicine, to include but not limited to cardiology, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, rheumatology, geriatrics, women’s health, and dentistry.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide support for same-day access to mental health services for Veterans in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to work with multiple disciplines and collaborate with mid-level providers consistent with licensure and credentialing.
  • Fulfill after-hours, weekend and holiday general psychiatry on-call duties in rotation with other psychiatrists and may be called upon for service-wide cross-coverage when necessary to maintain facility psychiatric service requirements.
  • Ability to effectively provide comprehensive general psychiatric services. Experience with consultation and psychosomatic medicine is preferred.
  • Skilled in interpersonal relationships, including conflict resolution and the ability to work collaboratively with other service lines and departments.
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals or groups representing widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the goals and objectives of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
  • Adequate technology skills to efficiently utilize electronic records for patient care and for basic office electronic documentation and communication.

Highlights of position:

  • Work Schedule: Mon-Fri: 8AM-4:30PM, Periodic On-call

  • Eligible for a Faculty Appointment at UTHSC

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
