The Department of Family at Care New England, a major clinical affiliate of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, seeks an accomplished researcher to serve as Associate Chair of Research. The Department runs the FM clerkship at Brown and operates the Brown FM Residency Program, the only one in RI, training 48 residents across sites, in addition to Global Health and Diabetology Fellowships.  

Our research portfolio spans global health, cardiometabolic clinical trials and epidemiology, and mixed methods research. We are developing a center focused on informatics and learning from EMR data using causal inference methods. Brown University holds the contract for the Annals of Family Medicine providing unique opportunities in scholarly collaboration.  
 
Reporting directly to the Chair of Family Medicine, the Associate Chair duties include:  

  • Lead the research division and provide strategic direction for all departmental research initiatives 
  • Mentor faculty and trainees
  • Oversee Clinical Trials Unit
  • Maintain an active, externally funded research program 
  • Manage research budget
  • Maintain 20% protected time for research leadership and administration
  • Eligible for Brown University faculty appointment academic rank
  • Research focused, clinical service option if a family medicine trained physician

Candidate credentials and experience include:  

  • BC Family Medicine physician or PhD with established record in primary care research 
  • Demonstrated track record of federally funded research in Family Medicine or related health services 
  • Experience conducting independent research with sustained external funding
  • Experience with research administration, program leadership, mentorship of faculty, fellows and trainees 
  • Record of publications in peer reviewed articles
  • Expert in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research
  • Strong understanding of federal grant mechanisms and compliance requirements
  • Effective communication and leadership skills that foster a collaborative environment
