Physician - Anesthesiologist Position in San Francisco, CA!

Job Description

Join our Team at the Department of Veterans VA Medical Center, San Francisco, CA as a Physician – Anesthesiologist!

The San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC) Anesthesiology Service requires an Anesthesiologist to Manage adult patients many with multiple co-existing disease, rendered unconscious or insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgical and certain other medical procedures; including preoperative, intraoperatlve and postoperative evaluation and treatment; the support of life functions and vital organs under the stress of anesthetic, surgical and other medical procedures; medical management and consultation in pain management and critical care medicine, direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation, pulmonary care, supervision of patients In post-anesthesia care units and critically Ill patients In special care units.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia including performance of history and physical examination
  • Medical management of patients during the peri-operative period who are under physical and emotional stress
  • Management of post anesthetic recovery including procedural pain
  • Supervise and administer general anesthesia, regional, monitored anesthesia, pre and postoperative care, acute and chronic pain.
  • Place, manage, and utilize invasive monitors and lines including but not limited to arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, epidurals, spinal catheters and drains, infusions, etc.
  • Management of anesthesia for implantation, removal, replacement, and repair of pacemakers, cardioversion devices, deep brain stimulators, and other neuro and muscular stimulators and devices.
  • Must also be able to train medical students, student nurse anesthetists, and residents at all levels of experience.

Special considerations will be given to candidates who are diplomates of subspecialty boards of Anesthesiology including:

  • Critical Care Anesthesiology: Serve as consultants in the intensive care unit or as the primary attending depending on training, experience, board certification, and credentialling.
  • Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology: Management of cases which require or may require cardiopulmonary bypass, includes anesthesia for coronary artery surgery, valve surgery, "off pump CABG", and non-cardiac major vascular surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • manage minimally invasive cardiology cases for transcutaneous aortic valve replacement, mitral valve procedures, watchman procedures, pacemaker and implanted defibrillator implantation and removal.

Additional Requirement:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Anesthesiology.

Preferred Experience:

  • Must be fellowship trained or other experience may be considered as determined by the Chief, Anesthesia Service.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
