Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
    • (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    • (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    • (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
      Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirement:  Graduate from an accredited Urologic residency training program. Board Certification: Must be Board Certified by the American Board of Urology and have extensive clinical knowledge in the area of Urologic Surgery.

Work Schedule:  Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Position Summary: Serves as a Urologist within the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The incumbent's clinical and surgical duties involve diseases of the male and female urinary tract system, kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis). Incumbent may be required to provide mentoring and supervision to affiliated medical school students.

Surgical Role:
Participates in the operating room commensurate with technical abilities, performs preoperative and post-operative evaluation for surgical patients and discusses with staff: Surgery of Penis, Urethra, Orchiectomy (Simple-Radical), Ureter, Bladder, and Kidney. Participates in team approach to ensure appropriate patient assessments, anticipates patient care needs, prevents avoidable complications, and achieves optimal patient conditions. Acts in adherence to surgical care in accordance with ethical principles.

Clinic Role:
Comprehensive care of ambulatory patients in the outpatient Urology Clinic as well as care of all inpatients and patients presenting to the Emergency Department; Performs Clinic Examinations, Management of New Patient Consultations, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Administrative Role:
Appropriate charting including the timely documentation of patient assessment and plan of care. Completion of encounters and dictations of operative notes. Participation in committees if requested.

Supervisory Controls
The Urologist will report to the Chief of Surgery as primary supervisor.

  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
