Position Highlights:

Provide state-of-the-art emergency care to Veterans

Lead process improvements to enhance patient outcomes and hospital standards

Mentor and teach students and residents, shaping future clinicians

Key Responsibilities:

Deliver comprehensive emergency medical assessments, diagnostics, and treatments

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality, safety, and compliance

Perform evaluations, interpret tests, and make critical treatment decisions aligned with VA best practices

Qualifications:

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine

Unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory

Completion of an accredited residency in a core specialty

U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens considered only if qualified citizens are unavailable)

Board Certification or Eligibility in Emergency Medicine

 

Preferred Experience:

Board Certification in Emergency Medicine

Board Certification in Family or Internal Medicine with ED experience

About W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center

The W.G. Hefner VAMC is a 484-bed medical center located in Salisbury, North Carolina. Inpatient services are provided for acute medicine, cardiology, surgery, psychiatry, physical rehabilitation, subacute and extended care, neuropsychiatry services, psychiatric intensive care, and geropsychiatry. Primary and specialized outpatient services are provided at the medical center and outpatient clinics. The medical center is affiliated with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with a focus on resident involvement in primary care, dermatology, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, and psychiatry. The Salisbury VAMC is recognized as one of the largest employers in Rowan County and enjoys the recognition and respect of the community through an active outreach program.

Salisbury provides all the perks of a small town but is located just 40 minutes down Hwy I-85 from Charlotte,NC which is the 33rd largest metropolitan in the nation boasting 1.84 million in population. Both Greensboro, NC and Winston-Salem NC are located within 1 hours drive. Salisbury has a population of 26,548, and is the county seat of Rowan County. It is also the home of three colleges: Catawba College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and Livingstone College

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
